Day 2: Riding from through Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels and Bourke’s Luck Potholes

Day 2: Riding from through Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels and Bourke’s Luck Potholes

Sunrise in Magoebaskloof

The crisp morning air of Magoebaskloof greeted me at 6 am. After a night where the lodge remained shrouded in darkness and fog, the early morning brought the opportunity to explore the property. It was stunning; a collection of well-maintained cabins and a restaurant boasting breathtaking views. My personal cabin was charming, but the real highlight was the panoramic vista that stretched across the rolling landscape. The traditional African Rondavels, with their unique design, added a touch of authentic charm.

Hitting the Road: Magoebaskloof to Hazyview

With the sun rising, it was time to embark on day two of our motorcycle adventure. Today’s destination: Hazyview, a 300-kilometer ride through the heart of South Africa. The journey began, and we were quickly immersed in the region’s agricultural bounty. Lush banana plantations, sugarcane fields, avocado orchards, and citrus groves lined the roads, painting a vibrant picture of rural life.

Tzaneen and Beyond

We passed through the bustling town of Tzaneen, a vibrant hub of activity. The local market was a feast for the eyes, especially the colorful bell peppers. A quick break allowed us to appreciate the beauty of the Limpopo province, an area dotted with private game reserves. We even had a close encounter with a family of baboons crossing the road, a truly unforgettable moment.

Rural Charm and Abel Erasmus Pass

The ride continued through rural communities, where colorful tire decorations adorned a local daycare and a high school stood proudly. A quick petrol and hydration stop prepared us for the climb through the Abel Erasmus Pass. Finally, the winding roads we had been longing for! Opening the throttle and leaning into the curves, we were rewarded with stunning views of the valley below.

Blyde River Canyon: A Natural Wonder

Our first vista point stop was the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon, the world’s third-largest canyon. The iconic Three Rondavels, resembling traditional African huts, stood majestically in the distance. The dry season had lowered the Blyde River, but the scenery was no less awe-inspiring. The local souvenir shops, filled with happy, singing vendors, added to the vibrant atmosphere.

Bourke’s Luck Potholes and Pinnacle Rock

Next, we explored Bourke’s Luck Potholes, cylindrical holes carved by water over millions of years. Then, it was on to Pinnacle Rock, a 100-foot quartzite monolith with a beautiful waterfall cascading nearby. The sheer scale and natural beauty of the Blyde River Canyon were truly humbling.

Hazyview: Glamping in Style

The final stretch led us through a stunning mountain pass to Hazyview, the gateway to Kruger National Park. The anticipation for our glamping experience was high, and we weren’t disappointed. Our tent was nothing short of luxurious, complete with an attached bathroom, hot and cold water, and even air conditioning!

Looking Forward to Kruger

As day two came to a close, excitement filled the air. Tomorrow, we would be glamping inside Kruger National Park, a dream I had held for a decade. The adventure continues, and I can’t wait to share it with you. Stay tuned for more stories from the road!
